Lesson learned-Carry Band-Aids on estimates!

There is a skill in using a tape measure, “believe it or not.”
You know the type I mean. .
That metal tape measure that rewinds at the push of a button?              
Having sold commercial jobs for many years (the good old days?) I always had someone with me that would do the “take-off” measurements. 

This obviously was a whole lot easier than doing it myself!

Now taking accurate measurements is a fundamental skill and the consumer can easily tell if you have been around a tape measure before!

The first few estimates I gave were comedic with all the pure fumbling and bumbling with my new Home Depot bought ruler.

I could chalk it up to a new selling technique but several consumers simply grabbed the tape measure from me and offered to “do it themselves!”.

Well, like everything else in life; the more you do something the better you get at it.

After thousands of estimates I had become the “Wyatt Earp” of tape measure.

Sure enough I show up right on time (thank you GPS!) and rang the doorbell.

The conversation ensued and eventually it was time to measure and show off my well honed tape measure skills.

Somehow until that moment it had never dawned on me just how sharp the edge is on my trusty wonder measurer.

Now don’t get me wrong, you can’t shave with it, but I quickly discovered the sharp side of the force when I immediately sliced my thumb. .ouch!!

Remember this is the very first window and there’s at least 40 more to measure.

“Excuse me Mr. Prospective customer. .do you happen to have a band-aid???  Oops. .err. .paper towel??”

Plus. . I’m the type of nut that doesn’t react well to the sight of blood, particularly my own!!

Being the trooper I am- -I tried valiantly to measure the rest of the windows and write down the results on my quotation sheet. Messy- -messy.

Mr. Prospect says: “Are you OK?? You kind’a look pale.”

Just when I am about to calculate the totals, my thumb wrapped like a mummy with Bounty (that stuff really works!) who walks in but a local Solar Gard dealer!!

Sammy SolarGard says: “Cut yourself. .eh??” (leave it to him to be so observant!)

We exchange pleasantries- – I tell Sammy that the consumer had cut me as a warning to get the best possible price and that he sure got my attention!!

The customer laughed, but Sammy Solargard looked a bit concerned.

I assured my competition that I was joking. (Of course I didn’t explain how I cut myself taking measurements. 

I figure it’s a “Man Thing” best left private)

I hand my estimate to the customer a far distance away from Sammy.

Blood on the form and all.

I joked “that our business is signed in blood and that my DNA assures a quality job.”

“By the way. .I tell him. .this finger cutting technique is a new method of assuring that our customers remember us!”

“We’ll jump through hoops to earn your business!”
The conclusion?

We install Monday at 9 AM.

My finger still hurts like heck, and every time I pull out that tape measure I get a chill!!

The wonders of self employment!

Business In The Toilet New Window Film Ad Techniques?

I read the internet news every morning before I write a posting, just in case there is some major event going on in the world that might change my mind about joking around.

There is, after all, a time and place for everything!

I recall getting a kick out of this story about a woman who sat on the toilet for two years. .

Which reminds me. .

Way back last year when I began planning my marketing/advertising programs.

I received a visit from a lady who promised me that she had the most effective marketing plan in the Tampa Bay area.

I could place low cost ads, and she would give me the low down during the consultation.

She asked the usual questions seemingly interested in my business and any “other’ marketing programs I’d considered or executed.  Then she proceeded to outline her program.

She had print ads that would capture men to read them for 30 seconds and women for two to three minutes!

A “captured” audience she called it.  Admittedly I was curious, after all even a Billboard gets only a two second attention span.genius Seems they place ads in the Men’s room and ladies bathrooms all around town. 

In clubs and some fancy shmansy restaurants. Top of the urinal and behind the door in the bathroom stalls.

I was inclined to laugh, but she was deathly serious; so I just nodded.

I tried logic.

I doubt, I said; pausing for effect, that the folks doing their business would really care about my business at that particular time.

She said that quite to the contrary, research indicated that women in the confines of the stall make important buying decisions.

I asked if my main competitor had gone “into the toilet?”

She got a bit huffy and said that “if I didn’t do her toilet ads, he would be her very next sales call. That he would get exclusivity on toilet ads and “I would never be allowed back in the toilet again!”

I couldn’t help but laugh out loud at this point.

I told her that an assortment of people would love to see my business “go down the toilet” and that, although I keep hearing that the economy stinks, “I wouldn’t want to see my ad money flushed down the drain.”

That I would “wash my hands” of her program.

She stormed off, never to return again!

I wonder if it would have worked??

Perhaps business would never stall??

I received a phone call from a potential client who had just received an estimate from a 3M dealer.

This dealer left a quote for “their” ceramic 30 film

They pressured the client offering a 15% discount that would expire in 48 hours. (A nice customer service touch!) 


They measured her windows but did not advise her how many square feet of glass (or film) would be required.

Since this consumer paid attention in her 3rd grade math class and was relatively handy with a calculator, she was able to figure out their per square foot pricing.

Her discount time ticking away. . .

She went online and called me.
 
 
  1. Her home has several windows that were larger than 60 inches. This client was never advised that she would have to have her windows seamed.  I gather they expected her not to notice a line coming either horizontally or vertically throughout several windows?  I guess they were figuring that they could do their best to hide the seam?20150618_103308
  2. I won’t pick on this dealer for trying hard to close the deal with that 48 hour nonsense. 

    (I’d bet a jelly doughnut that if she called them back and told them she had a better price from me, with a better film (Huper Optik ) they might reconsider and possibly extend that 48 hours while simultaneously reducing their price.)

  3. I explained that this “3M” ceramic film is actually manufactured by another company that re-sells the ceramic material to 3M. That several other companies offer the exact same performance as this re-boxed material.
  4. I explained that Huper Optik has a patent. This is critically important because it explains why they are unique and the advantages consumers receive are unique!bgThis patent protects their process of multilayered composition. This reduces the interior and exterior reflectivity compared to these resellers of the older process.   6. I explained that the Huper Optik optional glass breakage and seal failure warranty covered $2000 per window. I may be in error, but my understanding is that the 3M cap per window is $500.
  7. I explained that my price was better than their estimate despite the numerous advantages the Huper Optik film has over this repackaged single layer film.

  8. I pointed out the irony of their marketing materials that state that this ceramic film “is the only ceramic that is worthy of the 3M name.”  You might almost get tricked into believing they had anything to do with making this film. Nice try!
  9. I suggested that she consider comparing my Huper Optik to their Prestige film. It’s at least a better fight and 3M actually makes that one!10007413_731450313555109_2027544993_n
  10. I explained that our price would hold for as long as she needed to make a proper decision. I would immediately send her samples and provide data points to affirm these facts. I also mentioned that our ceramic film in the20% light transmission and the 35% version meet TECO rebate requirements. Theirs  (I mean “their” re-boxed film does not!)

It’s really not a fair fight.
